re: DBM and WeakAuras: Making you a better raider.

Addons should HELP your raid awareness... If they're not, then you need to adjust them.

I would encourage everyone to periodically think about how they've got their UI setup for a raid environment & adjust things as needed on a tier by tier and boss by boss basis. The goal: continual improvement, or at least a consistant lessening of fail. Two of the most invaluable tools we have to help us kill those big bosses in raids are DBM and WeakAuras. However, I doubt any of us is taking anywhere near full advantage of what these two addons can do to help us play better. Furthermore, in the case of DBM, I think most players have allowed it's "out of the box" configuration to become more of a hinderance than a help. So I feel the need to discuss what can be done to improve the way we have it setup in the hopes of boosting our raiders ability to react quickly, accurately and relaibly to the ever changing situations during a raid boss encounter.

DBM relies on two main methods of delivering information about a given encounter to you; Bars and Sounds. Have you noticed that during most fights in WOD you're being spammed by bars and sound warnings for what seems like every damn ability and cooldown in the fight? I sure have. This innevitably promotes a tendancy for us to tune most of them out, including the important ones.

Well, believe it or not, you can (& should) adjust your own DBM settings quite easily. Beyond simply moving the bars around and resizing things, you should go into the boss specific options and pare things down to only those that you need to be concearned with and leave out the rest of the spam, making for a much more useable raid tool and a much more aware player. Go through each bosses options. Uncheck EVERY warning, then recheck only those that pertain to your role in the fight. (If you're not a tank, you dont need to know the CD on the next Armor debuff you're not going to even get, right?)

This will take any experienced raider about 10 minutes to do for the entirety of the BRF instance, and if it saves you even 1 death on a progression fight, thats 10 minutes very well spent and possibly a Brez saved :D

DBM (or other "BossMods") shouldn't be your only source of information about whats happening during an encounter. Another addon that's all too frequently underutilized is WeakAuras. Did you know that WeakAuras can do alot more than monitor your own cooldowns and abilities? It can act to suppliment bossmods and provide very good warnings and information about boss specific debuffs, spellcasts that need to be interrupted (Including CastBars) and general situations like when you're standing in fire or when you need to stop casting to avoid being interrupted yourself. Of course the learning curve and time required to create all those warnings yourself can be rather steep, but thats why it has to ability to easily Import "Strings" or Premade Auras built in to its menu. There are a ton of really good auras out there for every Class, Spec and BOSS Encounter in the game, they're free to use and easily customized to fit in to your own UI needs.

For more detailed DBM and WeakAura guide specific to BRF (w/ Pictures) and a number of premade Auras you can import, here is a very good blog post to get you started  http://iam.yellingontheinternet.com/2015/02/16/raid-awareness-applied-blackrock-foundry-edition/ Copy/Paste your heart out... It's worth it.

As always, if you want help or advice on any aspect of your UI that may improve your awareness as a raider, hit me up.

re: DBM and WeakAuras: Making you a better raider.

Also, a youtube video on how to adjust DBM's options, in case you're in need.

And another vid for setting up the VEM style Voicepack for DBM, very worthwhile.
